If Humberto Barragan had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 20th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Inter de Guayaquil FC's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Humberto Barragan in the 24th minute. In the 25th match minute, Inter de Guayaquil FC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Hector Andriesens to maneuver through the defense. In the 41st minute of the match Inter de Guayaquil FC got a corner. USA's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Humberto Barragan ran over to the corner to take the kick. A well-hit corner resulted in Saffet Ataergin heading the ball towards the goal, but to his dismay he misdirected it and missed the goal completely. In the 47th match minute, Inter de Guayaquil FC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Humberto Barragan to maneuver through the defense. Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Cassius Byrne to make the kick off. With an all-out effort, USA's Sebastian Hellkvist threw himself towards the right post 57 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Monty Rogers, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. The USA fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Marco Day should have stopped the shot. Sebastian Hellkvist made a fantastic save in the 79th minute, when Sam Campbell sent off a good shot on target. Sebastian Hellkvist made an important save on a dangerous shot by Sam Campbell in the 82nd minute. Jörn Svartengren recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 84th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. When USA's Khalid Parry in the 89th minute got a chance for a shot 89th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Inter de Guayaquil FC's goalie prevented a goal. 96 minutes into the match, Inter de Guayaquil FC's goal looked a bit too open when Khalid Parry came free, but Sebastian Hellkvist reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. USA's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
