Volker Harm had in the 11thth minute some difficulties stopping Daniel Zorita's well aimed penalty as it nearly passed him on his left side, but he still managed to hold the ball. Frank Groth charged in rather forcefully in the 17th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. In the 24th minute Felix Montenegro shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Volker Harm saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Volker Harm showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Daniel Zorita in the 28th minute of the match. Cristian Sancho sent away a hard shot on goal in the 33rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Volker Harm showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Daniel Zorita, who was totally free with the ball in the 37th minute. The FC Hamburg players were disheartened as they walked off the pitch after the first half. Ecuador were winning 0-1.

When the final whistle sounded Ecuador left the ground with the victory after a much better performance than FC Hamburg.
