The supporters of Skövde AIK booed when Ecuador was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 19 match minutes in a wonderful position. Skövde AIK's Ronnie Hellström played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Cristian Sancho in the 27th minute of play. Ronnie Hellström took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Cristian Sancho, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The corner led to Skövde AIK's Knut Rudberg getting away a dangerous shot that went just outside the goal. Cristian Sancho kicked well hit freekick during the 44th minute of the match. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Daniel Zorita to make the kick off. Cristian Sancho sent away a hard shot on goal in the 52nd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After 53 played minutes Ecuador got a freekick which was hit by Camilo Gisbert. With a little luck, Skövde AIK's Ronnie Hellström got control of the ball when Daniel Zorita tried to sneak it across the goal line. Cristian Sancho's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Ronnie Hellström read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 59th minute of play. Georg Norström hit a great freekick 61 minutes into the match. Egídio Fernandez's late challenge caught a Ecuador's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Egídio Fernandez helped the player get up and apologised. The goalkeeper, Ronnie Hellström, was totally fooled by Ecuador's Daniel Zorita, who 67 minutes into the game made a penalty shot that went in on the goalkeeper's left side. Cristian Sancho could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 80th minute of the match, but Ronnie Hellström made a huge save. After 82 played minutes Skövde AIK got a freekick which was hit by Filip Brolin. In the 84th match minute, Skövde AIK was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Filip Brolin to maneuver through the defense. If Daniel Zorita had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 88th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. When the final whistle sounded Ecuador left the ground with the victory after a much better performance than Skövde AIK.
