Waterbury Rangers's Willis Geiger proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 8th minute of the match, managed to save Waterbury Rangers from getting a goal against them. Tomas Illescas who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 11thth minute tested the skills of Willis Geiger when he managed to save the team from getting behind. 15 minutes into the match, Tomas Illescas notched a goal, 1-1, to the right of Waterbury Rangers's Willis Geiger. Willis Geiger was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. A collision led to Venezuela getting a freekick after 19 minutes play. Patricio Costa hit a great ball. Tomas Illescas fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 24th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Willis Geiger having to interfere. After having played for 26 minutes, Tomas Illescas managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Venezuela's supporters crossed their fingers, but Tomas Illescas was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. After a defensive mix-up in Waterbury Rangers's zone, Tomas Illescas stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Willis Geiger came out of the goal and Tomas Illescas tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. In the 34th minute, Jonathan Venegas hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After 35 played minutes, Waterbury Rangers's Reginald Knight shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Jonathan Ferrant came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Waterbury Rangers reached it. The supporters of Venezuela booed when Waterbury Rangers was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 36 match minutes in a wonderful position. Andreas Carrey didn't get a good kick on the ball. Tomas Illescas received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 40th minute. Willis Geiger tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After 43 minutes, Patricio Costa mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Venezuela and the Waterbury Rangers players grew even worse after the yellow card. In the 44th match minute, Venezuela was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Patricio Costa to maneuver through the defense.
The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Stacy Colvin to strike the kick off in the second half. 57 minutes into the game, Tomas Illescas was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Venezuela's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Waterbury Rangers the free kick. After 57 played minutes Venezuela got a freekick which was hit by Tomas Illescas. An unexpectedly hard shot by Stacy Colvin in the 60th minute of play forced Venezuela's goalkeeper Jonathan Ferrant to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After having played for 65 minutes, Patricio Costa managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Willis Geiger showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Patricio Costa, who was totally free with the ball in the 74th minute. DeAngelo Keen hit a great freekick 75 minutes into the match. After recieving a nice pass, Venezuela's Tomas Illescas tried to score from far away in the 76th minute, but the ball went over the crossbar. Patricio Costa received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 81st minute. Willis Geiger tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. A collision led to Venezuela getting a freekick after 84 minutes play. Patricio Costa hit a great ball. When Patricio Costa came up free with the goalie in the 86th minute, the Venezuela fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Patricio Costa couldn't finish the play.
