Ecuador's Julio Vera proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 18th minute of the match, managed to save Ecuador from getting a goal against them. In the 27th minute, Daniel Zorita made a precise shot to the right of Stojko Živko. Maksimir's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 0-3. The supporters of Ecuador booed when Maksimir was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 39 match minutes in a wonderful position. Adolf Tarbuk didn't get a good kick on the ball. After some fancy dribbling in the 41st minute, Agustín Saelices managed to get in a good position for a shot. Ecuador's supporters rose to their feet, but Agustín Saelices was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Stojko Živko breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. If Cristian Sancho had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 46th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 0-3 lead.

The supporters of Ecuador booed when Maksimir was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 51 match minutes in a wonderful position. Aljoša Koloper didn't get a good kick on the ball. Cristian Sancho scored 0-4 in the 52nd match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Stojko Živko, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. If Luis Andino had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 55th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Ecuador's Cristian Sancho got a good chance for a goal in the 57th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. 59 minutes into the game, Neno Perazić was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Maksimir's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Ecuador the free kick. After 59 minutes of play, the referee blew the whistle. It was a penalty for Maksimir! The referee gave Ecuador a penalty, 60 minutes into the game. The penalty shot was made by Daniel Zorita, who made a well placed shot into the net to the right of Maksimir's Stojko Živko. 0-5. In the 63rd minute, Adolf Tarbuk hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Daniel Zorita came free with the goalkeeper in the 65th minute of the match, and shot straight on target. The shot was a little too simple and Stojko Živko could save by the left post. Luis Andino might have been able to make a better finish in the 70th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Stojko Živko. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Luis Andino ran back to his position shaking his head. Stojko Živko made a fantastic save in the 74th minute, when Daniel Zorita sent off a good shot on target. Daniel Zorita fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 78th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Stojko Živko having to interfere. In the 81st minute, Sergej Knez left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Maksimir fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 1-5. Daniel Zorita sent away a hard shot on goal in the 84th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. When Ecuador's Daniel Zorita in the 90th minute got a chance for a shot 90th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Maksimir's goalie prevented a goal. Ecuador's fans were overjoyed with their teams well-earned victory and stayed in the stadium long after the final whistle to celebrate the win.
