Gertjan De Ryck was slow to take the kick. During this time Sporting Cristal's players had a chance to rest. Thanks to some nice moves Cassius Byrne could shoot a difficult shot in the 18th minute, which Jon Iruegas however easily saved by the left post. Marco Day made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Fernanco Peso in the 20th minute of play. Jon Iruegas made an important save on a dangerous shot by Monty Rogers in the 21st minute. In the 22nd minute of the match USA got a corner. Sporting Cristal's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Cassius Byrne ran over to the corner to take the kick. The corner first didn't look so dangerous but when Jacob May got the ball he succeeded in some way to get through the defenders to deliver a very hard score. Result 1-0. 23 minutes into the match. Jon Iruegas showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Monty Rogers in the 25th minute of the match. After 26 minutes Sporting Cristal's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Cassius Byrne who took care of the corner kick. A nice corner shot did that Zach Harrison got away a dangerous shot. Despite this Jon Iruegas quite easily got ahold of the ball to make the save. Cassius Byrne sent away a hard shot on goal in the 30th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Monty Rogers in the 36th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Jon Iruegas prevented the ball from getting in the gole. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Monty Rogers in the 40th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Jon Iruegas saved Sporting Cristal from getting behind. 42 minutes into the match, USA's Monty Rogers sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Jon Iruegas narrowly saved just below the crossbar. The supporters of USA booed when Sporting Cristal was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 44 match minutes in a wonderful position. Delfino Rosario didn't get a good kick on the ball. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.

53 minutes into the game, Diego Bradley threw the ball into play from the sideline. Sporting Cristal's Hüseyin Turan Elçibey quickly snatched the ball and retained possesion. Fernanco Peso took the ball and in the 54 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Marco Day. Marco Day dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 1-1. 63 minutes into the game, USA's Edward Mcdonald nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Jon Iruegas made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 2-1. Sporting Cristal made a substitution. Claudinei Suarbol replaced Sal Grandoso. A collision led to USA getting a freekick after 68 minutes play. Diego Bradley hit a great ball. USA made a substitution. Sam Campbell replaced Cassius Byrne. Diego Bradley kicked well hit freekick during the 69th minute of the match. In the 70th minute Sam Campbell shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Jon Iruegas saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Jon Iruegas was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it.
