The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. The supporters of Newell´s booed when Uruguay was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 3 match minutes in a wonderful position. Camilo Covarrubias didn't get a good kick on the ball. 9 minutes into the game, Sidónio Candeias cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 0-1. Joaquin Gayoso was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. An unexpectedly hard shot by Sidónio Candeias in the 17th minute of play forced Uruguay's goalkeeper Joaquin Gayoso to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Joaquin Gayoso prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Thor Rosin made a great header on Newell´s's corner, it was just that Uruguay's Joaquin Gayoso managed to reach the ball for a save. Joaquin Gayoso stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Sidónio Candeias's shot from short distance in the 41st minute. Newell´s were awarded a corner in the 43th minute after Uruguay's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Federico Peio took the corner.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Francisco Seco made a kick off. If Jaime Cazalla had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 51st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Tzvetomir Gruykin did some fancy footwork in front of goal and succeeded to deceive the defenders so he could slam the ball in 1-2 to the left of a surprised Joaquin Gayoso 52 minutes into the match. 55 minutes into the match, Uruguay's goalkeeper Joaquin Gayoso had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Sidónio Candeias. Sidónio Candeias succeeded to score despite a near miss that spronge from right pole into the goal to 1-3 in the 57th playminute. Newell´s's Pepito Tarnovskiy was substituted for Rogelio Larralde. Newell´s's Haroldo Banegas was substituted for Rafael Orain. When the match had gone on for 61 minutes, Sidónio Candeias took a quick shot and it went in 1-4 without a chance for Joaquin Gayoso to make any attempt to save it. Sidónio Candeias's shot when he came free in front of the goal in the 77thth minute, Joaquin Gayoso skillfully showed off with a save to what seemed to be an obvious goal. In the 80th minute of the match Uruguay got a corner. Newell´s's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag.
