It was a penalty for Atletico Nacional FC! The referee gave Ecuador a penalty, 22 minutes into the game. The penalty shot was made by Daniel Zorita, who made a well placed shot into the net to the right of Atletico Nacional FC's Felipe Varela. 1-0. Cristian Sancho who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 24thth minute tested the skills of Felipe Varela when he managed to save the team from getting behind. Cristian Sancho fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 26th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Felipe Varela having to interfere. Alejo Tauro kicked well hit freekick during the 27th minute of the match. With a little luck, Atletico Nacional FC's Felipe Varela got control of the ball when Felix Montes tried to sneak it across the goal line. In the 29th minute, Januário Monteiro hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. 35 minutes in the game, Luis Andino fired away an excellent shot, which passed to the side of the right post without Felipe Varela having to interfere. Daniel Zorita fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 37th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Felipe Varela having to interfere. If Agustín Saelices had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 39th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Julio Vera showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Gustavo Del Prete, who was totally free with the ball in the 41st minute. Bernad Albino received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 41st minute. Julio Vera tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Daniel Zorita kicked well hit freekick during the 44th minute of the match. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Daniel Zorita to make the kick off. A collision led to Atletico Nacional FC getting a freekick after 60 minutes play. Gaspard Azuela hit a great ball. In the 64th minute Marcos Villarias shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Julio Vera saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 70th minute, Cristian Sancho left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Ecuador fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 2-0. After some fancy dribbling in the 78th minute, Cristian Sancho managed to get in a good position for a shot. Ecuador's supporters rose to their feet, but Cristian Sancho was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Felipe Varela breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick.
