After having played for 12 minutes, Felix Montenegro managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Ecuador's supporters crossed their fingers, but Felix Montenegro was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Mauro Esteves showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Barnaba Blochowiak in the 16th minute of play forced Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Daniel Zorita was slow to take the kick. During this time Ecuador's players had a chance to rest. In the 37th minute Ecuador were awarded a corner. Daniel Zorita went to the cornerflag to take it. After 39 minutes Brokopondo's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Daniel Zorita who took care of the corner kick. Ecuador's Daniel Zorita was first on the ball when the corner was shot and he dangerously headed the ball towards goal, but Mauro Esteves in the goal jumped up to prevent it from getting in. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 1-2 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Barnaba Blochowiak stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Despite being the better team, Ecuador failed to find the winning goal and were forced to settle for a single point.
