The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. 5 minutes into the match, GuateFortín's goal looked a bit too open when Agustín Saelices came free, but Nery Pumpido reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 6th minute the ball was on its way in behind Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. If Daniel Zorita had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 10th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 16 minutes had been played when some careless play by Ecuador's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Angel Alvarenga was slow to take the kick. During this time GuateFortín's players had a chance to rest. GuateFortín's Angel Alvarenga was first on the ball when the corner was shot and he dangerously headed the ball towards goal, but Julio Vera in the goal jumped up to prevent it from getting in. Ecuador's Julio Vera proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 17th minute of the match, managed to save Ecuador from getting a goal against them. When Ecuador's Daniel Zorita in the 19th minute got a chance for a shot 19th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. GuateFortín's Nery Pumpido played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Cristian Sancho in the 34th minute of play. In the 35th minute Ecuador were awarded a corner. Daniel Zorita went to the cornerflag to take it. Nery Pumpido made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Daniel Zorita in the 37th minute of play. When Ecuador's Daniel Zorita in the 39th minute got a chance for a shot 39th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. In the 46th minute Sven-Edvin Jansson shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Julio Vera saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 48th minute, Angel Alvarenga reached a very good position and smashed the ball with a huge effort into the net, just to the left of Julio Vera. The goal made the score 2-0. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 2-0 at half-time.
