Ardiles's attack was well implemented in the 3rd minute, but when Donato Venerando was about to shoot he didn't get a good hit on the ball and it hit the crossbar and flew over. After a rather tough play, Chile's Orlando Casaus got a free kick in the 32nd minute. An unexpected shot in the 35th minute by Mariano Lacasa got the crowd on their feet, but to their dismay it went out on the left side. Chile's Thiago Pliego played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Indiana Jones in the 38th minute of play. 40 minutes into the match, Chile's goal looked a bit too open when Jimeno Abastas came free, but Thiago Pliego reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Guillermo Fontirroig sent away a hard shot on goal in the 47th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal.

Erik Kassentoft was frozen by the shot and now it was 3-3.
