Quinto Fonticoba stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Joel Gaona's shot from short distance in the 4th minute. Luca Rouco's late challenge caught a Grêmio Prudente's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Luca Rouco helped the player get up and apologised. After 7 played minutes Mexico got a freekick which was hit by Luca Rouco. Quinto Fonticoba took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Lautaro Mancebo, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The corner led Mexico's Joel Gaona to fire away a dangerous shot which Quinto Fonticoba despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. A collision led to Grêmio Prudente getting a freekick after 14 minutes play. Eleuterio Gaztea hit a great ball. Quinto Fonticoba made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Alberto Tafalla in the 17th minute of play. Quinto Fonticoba came out of the goal in the 24th minute to try and stop a shot by Mexico's Joel Gaona. But to his dismay, Joel Gaona quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-1. 30 minutes into the match, Grêmio Prudente's goal looked a bit too open when Lautaro Mancebo came free, but Quinto Fonticoba reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Edson Ribeiro in the 35thth minute had a little luck and got a chance for a shot in front of the goal. Without hesitation aimed to the right of Dante Lacasa, who managed to lunge to the right direction and made a save. Gomesano Gatica struck a weak shot in the 39th minute. Dante Lacasa didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Grêmio Prudente. After some fancy dribbling in the 40th minute, Alberto Tafalla managed to get in a good position for a shot. Mexico's supporters rose to their feet, but Alberto Tafalla was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Quinto Fonticoba breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. The audience thought a goal was coming when Edson Ribeiro got free with Dante Lacasa in the 45th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-1 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

After 54 minutes Mexico's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Eleuterio Gaztea who took care of the corner kick. An unexpectedly hard shot by Lautaro Mancebo in the 56th minute of play forced Grêmio Prudente's goalkeeper Quinto Fonticoba to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The supporters of Mexico booed when Grêmio Prudente was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 58 match minutes in a wonderful position. Edson Ribeiro didn't get a good kick on the ball. 65 minutes into the match, Edson Ribeiro notched a goal, 1-1, to the right of Mexico's Dante Lacasa. Dante Lacasa was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Dante Lacasa made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Edson Ribeiro in the 69th minute of play. 72 minutes had been played when some careless play by Grêmio Prudente's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Joel Gaona was slow to take the kick. During this time Mexico's players had a chance to rest. 75 minutes into the match, Mexico's Joel Gaona broke free and took a long shot that unfortunately flew wide. A fine initiative that could have resulted in a goal. Dante Lacasa made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Lucrețiu Grigore in the 77th minute of play. Joel Gaona could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 78th minute of the match, but Quinto Fonticoba made a huge save. After having played for 86 minutes, Joel Gaona managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Mexico's supporters crossed their fingers, but Joel Gaona was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 88 minutes into the game, Grêmio Prudente's Edson Ribeiro nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Dante Lacasa made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 2-1. In the 93rd minute Lucrețiu Grigore shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Dante Lacasa saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Alberto Tafalla fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 95th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Quinto Fonticoba having to interfere.
