Ecuador were awarded a corner in the 14th minute after Grêmio 20 Julho's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Daniel Zorita took the corner. Julio Vera made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Valdemar de Amaral in the 16th minute of play. In the 26th play minute Cristian Sancho came free and shot an unsuspected shot which went into goal from the right pole behind a surprised Sylwester Zarobski. 1-0. Ecuador's Luis Andino got a good chance for a goal in the 39th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Julio Vera didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Valdir Cavalcante went, in the 41st minute, to the upper right corner, 1-1 was the resulting score. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Daniel Zorita to strike the kick off in the second half. Sylwester Zarobski showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Cristian Sancho, who was totally free with the ball in the 50th minute. Sylwester Zarobski took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Cristian Sancho, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The referee felt a red card was in order, 74 minutes into the game, when Amílton de Andrade put in a rough tackle. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Sylwester Zarobski showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. Ecuador's Julio Vera played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Gilmar Romero in the 79th minute of play. 81 minutes had been played when some careless play by Ecuador's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Humberto Soeiro was slow to take the kick. During this time Grêmio 20 Julho's players had a chance to rest. The corner led Grêmio 20 Julho's Gilmar Romero to fire away a dangerous shot which Julio Vera despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. The Grêmio 20 Julho fans' excitement grew in the 81st match minute when Grêmio 20 Julho's Gilmar Romero looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 1-2 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene.
