The audience thought a goal was coming when Alberto Tafalla got free with Kajetan Smolarek in the 15th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Joel Gaona fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 19th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Kajetan Smolarek having to interfere. The crowd rose to their feet as Lautaro Mancebo kicked a wonderful shot that went in to the left of a diving Kajetan Smolarek. That made the score 2-0 in the 23 minute of play. The supporters of barcelona de guayaquil booed when Mexico was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 26 match minutes in a wonderful position. Lorenzo Cazalla didn't get a good kick on the ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Borja Camerin in the 30th minute of play forced Mexico's goalkeeper Dante Lacasa to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Mexico's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Isaltino Carneiro was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 2-1. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 2-1.

A collision led to Mexico getting a freekick after 61 minutes play. Neither set of supporters seemed pleased with the draw, but both teams had played equally well today.
