Petruț Dicu dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 0-1. Petruț Dicu took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Joel Gaona, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The supporters of Mexico booed when Exército Português was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 21 match minutes in a wonderful position. Abel Carvalhais didn't get a good kick on the ball. Petruț Dicu made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Luca Zorita in the 25th minute of play. Facundo Cadaval kicked well hit freekick during the 27th minute of the match. In the 28th match minute Gustavo Carrasqueira ran free in the middle of the field and shot a long shot which scored behind a totally surprised Dante Lacasa. 1-1. Dante Lacasa showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Bruno Soveral in the 31st minute of the match. 34 minutes into the match, Exército Português's goal looked a bit too open when Joel Gaona came free, but Petruț Dicu reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Petruț Dicu showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Alberto Tafalla, who was totally free with the ball in the 35th minute. 39 minutes had been played when some careless play by Exército Português's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Joel Gaona was slow to take the kick. During this time Mexico's players had a chance to rest. Petruț Dicu made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Joel Gaona in the 42nd minute of play. Petruț Dicu showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Lautaro Mancebo, who was totally free with the ball in the 43rd minute. When the match clock showed 46 minutes, the score became 1-2 when Joel Gaona sped through Exército Português's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Petruț Dicu. After the first half Mexico were leading 1-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.
