An unexpectedly hard shot by Daniel Zorita in the 32nd minute of play forced Villa Mitre City's goalkeeper Ariel Ponc to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Arsenio Maria in the 34th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Julio Vera saved Ecuador from getting behind. In the 35th minute of the match Villa Mitre City got a corner. Ecuador's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Arsenio Maria ran over to the corner to take the kick. Ariel Ponc showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Daniel Zorita, who was totally free with the ball in the 36th minute. In the 37th minute Ecuador were awarded a corner. Daniel Zorita went to the cornerflag to take it. The corner went over the outstretched arms of Villa Mitre City's goalie and right to Agustín Saelices. He fired away a shot at goal, but the shot had too much spin, and it went just outside the goal. Villa Mitre City's manager breathed a sigh of relief on the sidelines as his team had managed to escape an almost certain goal. In the 37th minute Agustín Saelices shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Ariel Ponc saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 52nd minute of the match, Cristian Sancho got a very nice opportunity to score, but Ariel Ponc was well-placed and pushed the ball away from the goal at the left post. The audience thought a goal was coming when Cristian Sancho got free with Ariel Ponc in the 56th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 58th minute, Mauricio Macías left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Villa Mitre City fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 1-3. Villa Mitre City's Fulgencio Iratzeder was substituted for Eloy Urdaspal.
