With a little luck, Costa Rica's Benito Sanz got control of the ball when Tomé Brasil tried to sneak it across the goal line. Olívio França kicked well hit freekick during the 10th minute of the match. Benito Sanz showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from César de Queiroz in the 12th minute of the match. In the 15th minute, Olívio França ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Benito Sanz was frozen by the shot and now it was 1-0. Hugo Ferrant's late challenge caught a Atlético Mineiro's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Hugo Ferrant helped the player get up and apologised. The referee blew the whistle for a penalty in the 20th minute of the game. One of Costa Rica:s players had nearly got his shirt torn off by an opponent while getting free in front of Atlético Mineiro:s goal. In the 27th minute, Atlético Mineiro's César de Queiroz ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Benito Sanz. Benito Sanz yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 3-0. The supporters of Costa Rica booed when Atlético Mineiro was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 32 match minutes in a wonderful position. Ove Friberger didn't get a good kick on the ball. After a rather tough play, Atlético Mineiro's Tomé Brasil got a free kick in the 34th minute. After recieving a nice pass, Costa Rica's Axel Tasis tried to score from far away in the 35th minute, but the ball went over the crossbar. Benito Sanz made an important save on a dangerous shot by André Luís Best in the 44th minute. 46 minutes into the game, Olívio França recieved a splendid long ball, split the defenders, and gently placed the ball to the left of Benito Sanz. Olívio França showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 4-0. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 4-0 at half-time.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Olívio França stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. An unexpectedly hard shot by César de Queiroz in the 55th minute of play forced Costa Rica's goalkeeper Benito Sanz to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 57th minute, Tomé Brasil left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Atlético Mineiro fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 5-0. After having played for 61 minutes, Olívio França managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Atlético Mineiro's supporters crossed their fingers, but Olívio França was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Olívio França scored 6-0 in the 63rd match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Benito Sanz, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. If Olívio França had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 70th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Fynn John showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Axel Tasis in the 77th minute of the match. In the 82nd minute, Olívio França got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Atlético Mineiro's Walmyr Guimarães got a good chance for a goal in the 90th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Efrain Moruga charged in rather forcefully in the 92nd minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Efrain Moruga the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. Olívio França received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 94th minute. Benito Sanz tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere.
