Nery Pumpido was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Fabio Huezo hit a great freekick 20 minutes into the match. With his leg Julio Vera managed to avoid a goal in the 29thth minute, when GuateFortín's Sven-Edvin Jansson fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. An unexpectedly hard shot by Cristian Sancho in the 31st minute of play forced GuateFortín's goalkeeper Nery Pumpido to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The supporters of Ecuador booed when GuateFortín was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 42 match minutes in a wonderful position. Heriberto Correa didn't get a good kick on the ball. Disappointed in the 0-1 score, the home team went to the dressing room to adjust tactics for the second half.

They had somehow managed to win, even though the away team had held the majority of the possession.
