An unexpectedly hard shot by Cristian Sancho in the 6th minute of play forced Sporting Clube de Gaya's goalkeeper Renato Vargas to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Renato Vargas stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Cristian Sancho's shot from short distance in the 10th minute. 14 minutes into the match, Sporting Clube de Gaya's goal looked a bit too open when Felix Montenegro came free, but Renato Vargas reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. 0-1 became the score in the 24th minute when Cristian Sancho elegantly shot the ball into goal just under the crossbar. The supporters of Sporting Clube de Gaya booed when Ecuador was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 29 match minutes in a wonderful position. Antonio Arias didn't get a good kick on the ball. The long shot by Fredy Montero in the 29th minute really tested Julio Vera's skills. The ball was on its way into the goal to the left of him when he managed to stretch himself and save the shot and avoid a goal. In the 34th minute Sporting Clube de Gaya were awarded a corner. Renato Vargas showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Daniel Zorita, who was totally free with the ball in the 38th minute. 43 minutes into the match, Daniel Zorita notched a goal, 0-2, to the right of Sporting Clube de Gaya's Renato Vargas. Renato Vargas was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. After 47 played minutes Sporting Clube de Gaya got a freekick which was hit by Eurico lago.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Lucílio Figueiras to make the kick off. Renato Vargas showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Luis Andino in the 52nd minute of the match. With 53 minutes on the clock, Marcus Edwards commited a dangerous tackle. The referee had no choice but to show him the red card. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for Sporting Clube de Gaya. Julio Vera tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. 93 minutes into the match, Lucílio Figueiras had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Julio Vera. Ecuador's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Lucílio Figueiras was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 1-5.
