The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. After a rather tough play, Ecuador's Luis Andino got a free kick in the 5th minute. Julio Vera showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Isidoro Beltran in the 6th minute of the match. With a little luck, Ecuador's Julio Vera got control of the ball when Jorg Pieters tried to sneak it across the goal line. Albano Bertol could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 11th minute of the match, but Julio Vera made a huge save. Independiente's Albano Bertol was first on the ball when the corner was shot and he dangerously headed the ball towards goal, but Julio Vera in the goal jumped up to prevent it from getting in. Pepe Santoro showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Cristian Sancho in the 16th minute of the match. 17 minutes into the match, Cristian Sancho had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Pepe Santoro. Independiente's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Cristian Sancho was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 0-1. Pepe Santoro made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Cristian Sancho in the 20th minute of play. Ecuador's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Daniel Zorita in the 25th minute. Cristian Sancho made a great header on Ecuador's corner, it was just that Independiente's Pepe Santoro managed to reach the ball for a save. After having played for 52 minutes, Jorg Pieters managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Independiente's supporters crossed their fingers, but Jorg Pieters was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Ecuador's Julio Vera played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Isidoro Beltran in the 54th minute of play. Julio Vera took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Jorg Pieters, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Napoleon Dropinski hit a great freekick 61 minutes into the match. 63 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goal looked a bit too open when Isidoro Beltran came free, but Julio Vera reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Without hesitation aimed to the right of Pepe Santoro, who managed to lunge to the right direction and made a save. In the 81st minute, Daniel Zorita got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Isidoro Beltran recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 89th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. The supporters of Ecuador booed when Independiente was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 96 match minutes in a wonderful position. Florentino Inge didn't get a good kick on the ball. When the match was over Ecuador could go home with a victory in their luggage, having controlled the game far better than Independiente throughout the match.
