The supporters of Hertha 1969 booed when Colombia was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 10 match minutes in a wonderful position. Antonio Indiano didn't get a good kick on the ball. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Axel Montenegro in the 21st minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Rune Jarstein prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Rune Jarstein made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Santino Seco in the 24th minute of play. Lüder Roppel hit a great freekick 47 minutes into the match. After having played for 48 minutes, Axel Montenegro managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Colombia's supporters crossed their fingers, but Axel Montenegro was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.
The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Wilhelm Nienhaus was the one to do the kick off.
