The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Damaso Sancho fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 3rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Óscar Cordoba having to interfere. Congo Bongo's Kaj-Åke Kaká quickly snatched the ball and retained possesion. The audience was convinced that Damaso Sancho's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Óscar Cordoba was relentless in the 13th minute of the game. Kaj-Åke Kaká hit a great freekick 13 minutes into the match. Máté Márton made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Diego Maradona in the 19th minute of play. In the 34th minute Congo Bongo were awarded a corner. Franz Beckenbauer went to the cornerflag to take it. The corner ended in Franz Beckenbauer almost managing to get the ball behind the net, but Sporting de Gijón's Óscar Cordoba did a great save. Sporting de Gijón's Óscar Cordoba played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Damaso Sancho in the 36th minute of play. Máté Márton made a fantastic save in the 37th minute, when Rune Fanström sent off a good shot on target. Congo Bongo were awarded a corner in the 40th minute after Sporting de Gijón's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Franz Beckenbauer took the corner. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Matias Bilintx to make the kick off. 50 minutes into the match, Sporting de Gijón's goalkeeper Óscar Cordoba had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Damaso Sancho. Sergio Austin could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 64th minute of the match, but Óscar Cordoba made a huge save. Omar Erramun hit a great freekick 70 minutes into the match. In the 71st match minute, Congo Bongo was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Omar Erramun to maneuver through the defense. In the 72nd minute of the match Eustacio Loiola sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Máté Márton skillfully saved the ball. The corner led to Congo Bongo's Iker Atarrabi getting away a dangerous shot that went just outside the goal. Óscar Cordoba took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Damaso Sancho, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Máté Márton showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Wayne Rooney in the 83rd minute of the match. The supporters of Sporting de Gijón booed when Congo Bongo was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 88 match minutes in a wonderful position. Arnaldo Oidor didn't get a good kick on the ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Wayne Rooney in the 90th minute of play forced Congo Bongo's goalkeeper Máté Márton to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Atilano Feo kicked well hit freekick during the 92nd minute of the match. In the 93rd match minute, Sporting de Gijón was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Kauan de Barros to maneuver through the defense. Sporting de Gijón's Óscar Cordoba played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Franz Beckenbauer in the 94th minute of play. Congo Bongo were clearly unhappy with the draw, as they felt they had done enough to earn themselves a victory.
