The referee ignored Ecuador's protests and gave Agustín Saelices a yellow card for diving instead. After 24 played minutes Ecuador got a freekick which was hit by Agustín Saelices. Julio Vera showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Carlos Fernando Albuquerque, who was totally free with the ball in the 29th minute. 40 minutes into the match, Ecuador's Daniel Zorita sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Battal Refiğ narrowly saved just below the crossbar.
