Ecuador's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Zhou Xiang Li was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 1-1. René Higuita showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Cristian Sancho in the 24th minute of the match. In the 31st minute the ball was on its way in behind Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. In the 32nd minute of the match ᗩɦmeɗo ᎥᏦᎥ Göȥüm got a corner. Ecuador's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Thoralf Banke ran over to the corner to take the kick. Julio Vera took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Zhou Xiang Li, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 35th minute, Daniel Zorita got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. In the 38th minute, ᗩɦmeɗo ᎥᏦᎥ Göȥüm's goalie took a deep sigh of relief after Daniel Zorita fired away a hard shot that went just outside the left post. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Zhou Xiang Li in the 41st managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Julio Vera saved Ecuador from getting behind. Julio Vera showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Zhou Xiang Li in the 43rd minute of the match. Cristian Sancho sent away a hard shot on goal in the 44th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Ecuador's Daniel Zorita got a good chance for a goal in the 46th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. The fans had the chance to grab some refreshments as the whistle went for half-time. The score stood at 1-1 after a close first half.

After a defensive mix-up in ᗩɦmeɗo ᎥᏦᎥ Göȥüm's zone, Cristian Sancho stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. René Higuita came out of the goal and Cristian Sancho tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. In the 53rd minute, Daniel Zorita left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Ecuador fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 2-1. In the 62nd match minute, Ecuador was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Agustín Saelices to maneuver through the defense. After 64 minutes, Angelo Hamberger mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the ᗩɦmeɗo ᎥᏦᎥ Göȥüm and the Ecuador players grew even worse after the yellow card. René Higuita made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Cristian Sancho in the 67th minute of play. Ecuador's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 2-2. Kornél Majoros hit a great freekick 82 minutes into the match. 88 minutes into the match, ᗩɦmeɗo ᎥᏦᎥ Göȥüm's goal looked a bit too open when Cristian Sancho came free, but René Higuita reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line.
