After some careless play in the cruz azul defense, Ambrosio Orlan kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Humberto Valiente. The cruz azul fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Humberto Valiente should have stopped the shot. 41 minutes into the match, cruz azul's goal looked a bit too open when Ruben Sauveur came free, but Humberto Valiente reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Anier Eudoxio in the 43rd minute of play forced cruz azul's goalkeeper Humberto Valiente to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball.
