The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. In the 3rd minute of the match Josue Sanchez sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Juan Melendez skillfully saved the ball. Juan Melendez showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Alfredo Orozco in the 4th minute of the match. Nicolás Posadas was really disappointed when he shot the ball just outside the right post instead of scoring a goal in the 6th minute. Peterborough City's manager could be seen on the sidelines shaking his head and muttering to himself as his team had just wasted another chance. Nicolás Posadas sent away a hard shot on goal in the 11th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Peterborough City's Alfredo Orozco got a good chance for a goal in the 13th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. When Ernesto Villatoro came up free with the goalie in the 17th minute, the Wath upon Dearne fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Ernesto Villatoro couldn't finish the play. After 20 minutes, Félix Bustamante mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Wath upon Dearne and the Peterborough City players grew even worse after the yellow card. Félix Bustamante hit a great freekick 20 minutes into the match. After some careless play in the Wath upon Dearne defense, Alfredo Orozco kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Juan Melendez. The Wath upon Dearne fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Juan Melendez should have stopped the shot. An unexpectedly hard shot by Nicolás Posadas in the 25th minute of play forced Wath upon Dearne's goalkeeper Juan Melendez to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The audience was convinced that Ernesto Villatoro's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Ismael Zaldaña was relentless in the 29th minute of the game. Peterborough City's Ismael Zaldaña played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Ernesto Villatoro in the 31st minute of play. Juan Melendez came out of the goal and Alfredo Orozco tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Ismael Zaldaña took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Ernesto Villatoro, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

Ismael Zaldaña made an important save on a dangerous shot by Gilberto Hernández in the 53rd minute. The attack was good, but when Ernesto Villatoro in the 55th minute was about to shoot he didn't kick quite good enough and the ball went high over goal. Allan Huezo fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 56th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Ismael Zaldaña having to interfere. In the 60th minute the ball was on its way in behind Peterborough City's goalkeeper Ismael Zaldaña, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. 64 minutes into the match, Wath upon Dearne's goal looked a bit too open when Alfredo Orozco came free, but Juan Melendez reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The audience was convinced that Alfredo Orozco's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Juan Melendez was relentless in the 68th minute of the game. Juan Melendez didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Alfredo Orozco went, in the 70th minute, to the upper right corner, 2-0 was the resulting score. After some fancy dribbling in the 75th minute, Alfredo Orozco managed to get in a good position for a shot. Peterborough City's supporters rose to their feet, but Alfredo Orozco was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Juan Melendez breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. After a defensive mix-up in Wath upon Dearne's zone, Alfredo Orozco stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat.
