Tancredo Malherbe tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Quim Jorge might have been able to make a better finish in the 9th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Tancredo Malherbe. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Quim Jorge ran back to his position shaking his head. Quim Jorge fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 12th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Tancredo Malherbe having to interfere. Florentino Cataldo's late challenge caught a Lazo's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Florentino Cataldo helped the player get up and apologised. The supporters of Lazo booed when Huachipato FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 13 match minutes in a wonderful position. Florentino Cataldo didn't get a good kick on the ball. Quim Jorge in the 14thth minute had a little luck and got a chance for a shot in front of the goal. Without hesitation aimed to the right of Tancredo Malherbe, who managed to lunge to the right direction and made a save. Abelardo Albarracin received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 24th minute. Tancredo Malherbe tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Tancredo Malherbe stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Abelardo Albarracin's shot from short distance in the 26th minute. After a defensive mix-up in Huachipato FC's zone, Quim Jorge stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Tancredo Malherbe came out of the goal and Quim Jorge tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Quim Jorge received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 30th minute. Tancredo Malherbe tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After 31 minutes of play Huachipato FC's Florentino Cataldo was too eager in his attempt to stop his opponent and brought him down. With that he got his second yellow card and was ordered off the ground. In the 33rd minute, Arturo Valdés hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Tancredo Malherbe was in exellent shape and made a fantastic save when he, in the 34th minute of the match, managed to get hold of the ball after a long shot from Romualdo Vivar. The audience thought a goal was coming when Quim Jorge got free with Tancredo Malherbe in the 38th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 40th minute, Gerardo Valderas made a precise shot to the right of Tancredo Malherbe. Huachipato FC's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-0. In the 43rd minute the ball was on its way in behind Huachipato FC's goalkeeper Tancredo Malherbe, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. If Quim Jorge had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 45th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. When Juan Eduardo Zubicueta fell near the penalty area in the 47th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Huachipato FC's protests and gave Juan Eduardo Zubicueta a yellow card for diving instead. After 47 played minutes Huachipato FC got a freekick which was hit by Juan Eduardo Zubicueta. It was beautiful to see Lazo's Constantino Villarroel in action when he in the 48th minute dribbled his way through a couple of opponents and the fired away a shot from almost standing still. First the ball seemed to get in, but turned out to be on the outside of the net. A great chance! All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Abelardo Albarracin stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Lazo were awarded a corner in the 55th minute after Huachipato FC's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Romualdo Vivar took the corner. After 57 played minutes Huachipato FC got a freekick which was hit by Alexandre Arriaran. Quim Jorge might have been able to make a better finish in the 62nd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Tancredo Malherbe. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Quim Jorge ran back to his position shaking his head. An unexpectedly hard shot by Abelardo Albarracin in the 63rd minute of play forced Huachipato FC's goalkeeper Tancredo Malherbe to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Arturo Valdés received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 64th minute. In the 88th minute, Romelio Tacull got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. In the 94th minute the ball was on its way in behind Huachipato FC's goalkeeper Tancredo Malherbe, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. In the 97th minute Abelardo Albarracin shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Tancredo Malherbe saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line.
