Dalmo de Sousa blasted a shot towards the goal in the 5th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Egídio Cosme having to make a save. In the 6th minute Marco Arce shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Roger Saldanha saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. João Francisco Mendes recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 9th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. 13 minutes into the game, João Francisco Mendes cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 0-1. Roger Saldanha was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. In the 17th match minute, Potengi was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Jânio Alvarenga to maneuver through the defense. In the 19th minute of the match Pimento got a corner. Potengi's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Gil da Cunha ran over to the corner to take the kick. The corner ended in Gil da Cunha almost managing to get the ball behind the net, but Potengi's Egídio Cosme did a great save. Roger Saldanha showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Marco Arce, who was totally free with the ball in the 24th minute. Dalmo de Sousa received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 26th minute. Egídio Cosme tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After a defensive mix-up in Pimento's zone, Marco Arce stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Roger Saldanha came out of the goal and Marco Arce tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Dalmo de Sousa in the 31st minute of play forced Potengi's goalkeeper Egídio Cosme to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling João Francisco Mendes in the 38th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Roger Saldanha prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Zacarias Zilles took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 40th minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Roger Saldanha. Pimento's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. Arthur Lira was astounded when the referee showed him the red card after a seemingly innocent challenge, 44 minutes into the match. 44 minutes into the game, one of Potengi:s players got tackled near the goal, and the referee blew for a penalty. Egídio Cosme went to the wrong direction when Gil da Cunha was taking care of the penalty kick which however missed the goal. After the first half Potengi were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.
Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell João Francisco Mendes to make the kick off. 53 minutes into the match, Potengi's goal looked a bit too open when Diamantino Carioca came free, but Egídio Cosme reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. With a little luck, Pimento's Roger Saldanha got control of the ball when João Francisco Mendes tried to sneak it across the goal line. Potengi's Waldir das Neves got a good chance for a goal in the 57th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. In the 60th minute, Hernani Freitas hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After some fancy dribbling in the 65th minute, João Francisco Mendes managed to get in a good position for a shot. Potengi's supporters rose to their feet, but João Francisco Mendes was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Roger Saldanha breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. João Francisco Mendes received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 68th minute. Roger Saldanha tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Pimento's Diamantino Carioca got a good chance for a goal in the 71st minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. The audience thought a goal was coming when Waldir das Neves got free with Roger Saldanha in the 74th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Pimento's Diamantino Carioca got a good chance for a goal in the 84th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. If Diamantino Carioca had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 86th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. In the 88th minute Diamantino Carioca shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Egídio Cosme saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Roger Saldanha made an important save on a dangerous shot by João Francisco Mendes in the 89th minute. Diamantino Carioca sent away a hard shot on goal in the 91st minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Diamantino Carioca blasted a shot towards the goal in the 94th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Egídio Cosme having to make a save.
