After 12 played minutes Ilhas FC got a freekick which was hit by Evaristo Arce. The audience was convinced that Guga Baiano's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Nestor Cruz was relentless in the 15th minute of the game. After a defensive mix-up in Gerimatalha SC's zone, Cipriano Carneiro stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Walmyr Quadros came out of the goal and Cipriano Carneiro tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Guga Baiano took the ball and in the 20 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Nestor Cruz. Cipriano Carneiro sent away a hard shot on goal in the 30th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Ricardo Figueiredo might have been able to make a better finish in the 33rd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Nestor Cruz. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. The referee ignored Ilhas FC's protests and gave Evaristo Arce a yellow card for diving instead. Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Cipriano Carneiro to make the kick off.
