An unexpectedly hard shot by Valdir das Neves in the 9th minute of play forced FLAMENGO's goalkeeper Nilson Lago to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. FLAMENGO's Nilson Lago proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 11th minute of the match, managed to save FLAMENGO from getting a goal against them. Emanuel Cruz took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 13th minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for João Marquez. Novilho's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. Patrício Bertassi might have been able to make a better finish in the 14th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over João Marquez. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Patrício Bertassi ran back to his position shaking his head. After a rather tough play, FLAMENGO's Cafu Moura got a free kick in the 16th minute. Nilson Lago made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Fausto de Lara in the 17th minute of play. Novilho were awarded a corner in the 19th minute after FLAMENGO's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Mané Xavier took the corner. FLAMENGO's defense didn't have a chance, in the 27th minute, when Alexsandro Quaresma scored to the left of an out of position Nilson Lago, making the score, 2-0. Fausto de Lara sent away a hard shot on goal in the 29th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After having played for 31 minutes, Patrício Bertassi managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. FLAMENGO's supporters crossed their fingers, but Patrício Bertassi was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. If Osvaldo Fernandes had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 32nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 37 minutes into the match, Patrício Bertassi had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of João Marquez. Novilho's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Patrício Bertassi was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 2-1. FLAMENGO's Patrício Bertassi got a good chance for a goal in the 42nd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. In the 43rd minute the ball was on its way in behind Novilho's goalkeeper João Marquez, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Patrício Bertassi succeeded in the game's 45th minute to shoot an unreachable shot under the crossbar and scored - 2-2. The first half was very even, with the score at 2-2 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Patrício Bertassi made a kick off. In the 55th match minute, FLAMENGO was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Kiko Quadros to maneuver through the defense. In the 59th minute, FLAMENGO's Patrício Bertassi dribbled the ball into the box and hit a shot with the outside of his foot, sending the keeper the wrong way. 2-4. After some fancy dribbling in the 63rd minute, Osvaldo Fernandes managed to get in a good position for a shot. FLAMENGO's supporters rose to their feet, but Osvaldo Fernandes was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. João Marquez breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Patrício Bertassi fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 64th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without João Marquez having to interfere. In the 65th minute, Osvaldo Fernandes got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Nilson Lago showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Alexsandro Quaresma in the 72nd minute of the match. After having played for 74 minutes, Patrício Bertassi managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. FLAMENGO's supporters crossed their fingers, but Patrício Bertassi was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Novilho's goalkeeper couldn't reach when Osvaldo Fernandes 75 minutes into the game got a good kick on the ball which found its way into goal just inside left pole. 2-5. João Marquez stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Patrício Bertassi's shot from short distance in the 90th minute. Nilson Lago took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Pedro Augusto Viana, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side.
