Luisinho Montenegro fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 18th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Chicão Alagoano having to interfere. After 19 minutes, Norberto Mendes mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Edmundo and the Espanha players grew even worse after the yellow card. In the 25th match minute, Espanha was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Wellington Teles to maneuver through the defense. In the 29th minute, Luisinho Montenegro had to leave the field with a concussion. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Belmiro Araújo during the 30th minute. Espanha's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. If Arnaldo da Fonseca had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 38th minute.
