Edmundo Tande made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Luizinho Nogueira in the 17th minute of play. 22 minutes into the game, Alex Salgado was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Sustino AD's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Vasco da Gama the free kick. After 22 played minutes Sustino AD got a freekick which was hit by Alex Salgado. 25 minutes into the match, Sustino AD's goal looked a bit too open when Luizinho Nogueira came free, but Edmundo Tande reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The crowd rose to their feet as Sustino AD's Nando Neto slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Luizão Salgado. That made the score 1-1 after 28 minutes of play. 32 minutes into the game, Nando Neto recieved a splendid long ball, split the defenders, and gently placed the ball to the left of Luizão Salgado. Nando Neto showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 2-1. Edmundo Tande showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Pedro Paulo Jacinto in the 39th minute of the match. An unexpectedly hard shot by Gerson Chaves in the 42nd minute of play forced Vasco da Gama's goalkeeper Luizão Salgado to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Nando Neto struck a weak shot in the 46th minute. Luizão Salgado didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Sustino AD. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 2-1.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Luizinho Nogueira to strike the kick off in the second half. After a rather tough play, Vasco da Gama's Américo Cardoso got a free kick in the 52nd minute. After recieving a nice pass, Sustino AD's Luiz Fabiano Pinho tried to score from far away in the 53rd minute, but the ball went over the crossbar. When Antônio Mazza fell near the penalty area in the 55th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Vasco da Gama's protests and gave Antônio Mazza a yellow card for diving instead. The supporters of Sustino AD booed when Vasco da Gama was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 55 match minutes in a wonderful position. Antônio Mazza didn't get a good kick on the ball. After 56 played minutes Vasco da Gama got a freekick which was hit by Luizinho Nogueira.
