The supporters of Nacional Futebol Clube booed when Ilhinha was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 3 match minutes in a wonderful position. Samuca Machado didn't get a good kick on the ball. Toninho Leme recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 4th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. 6 minutes into the match, Ilhinha's goal looked a bit too open when Wesley Gerber came free, but Wanderson de Souza reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. 7 minutes into the game, Erasmo Ortiz was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Nacional Futebol Clube's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Ilhinha the free kick. Erasmo Ortiz kicked well hit freekick during the 7th minute of the match. In the 8th minute Dionísio Albuquerque shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but João Paulo Pires saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 10th minute the ball was on its way in behind Ilhinha's goalkeeper Wanderson de Souza, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Dionísio Albuquerque struck a weak shot in the 11th minute. João Paulo Pires didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Ilhinha. When Erasmo Ortiz was, once again, overly rough in his play he received his second yellow card and was ordered off the ground. 13 minutes had been played. Erasmo Ortiz kicked well hit freekick during the 14th minute of the match. Noel Galvão hit a great freekick 21 minutes into the match. Noel Galvão recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 27th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. After 30 minutes, Toninho Leme mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Nacional Futebol Clube and the Ilhinha players grew even worse after the yellow card. In the 30th minute, one of Nacional Futebol Clube:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for Nacional Futebol Clube. Samuca Machado shot the penalty kick right outside the post. In the 34th match minute, Nacional Futebol Clube was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Toninho Leme to maneuver through the defense. In the 38th minute, Pedrão Garcia ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Wanderson de Souza was frozen by the shot and now it was 1-0. After some fancy dribbling in the 43rd minute, Dionísio Albuquerque managed to get in a good position for a shot. Ilhinha's supporters rose to their feet, but Dionísio Albuquerque was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. João Paulo Pires breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. 45 minutes into the match, Baltazar da Fonseca notched a goal, 1-1, to the right of Nacional Futebol Clube's João Paulo Pires. João Paulo Pires was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. The fans had the chance to grab some refreshments as the whistle went for half-time. The score stood at 1-1 after a close first half.

Ilhinha's supporters crossed their fingers, but Dionísio Albuquerque was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. In the 62nd match minute, Nacional Futebol Clube was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Noel Galvão to maneuver through the defense.
