The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Erasmo de Queiroz received a nice pass, split the defenders, and ran untouched towards the goal. Nico Carioca came out and tried to block the shot, but Erasmo de Queiroz slotted it home off the left post making it 1-0 in the 5th minute. After 11 minutes, Ramón Hames mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Guajara and the Marcelo players grew even worse after the yellow card. José Paulo Varela sent away a hard shot on goal in the 14th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. The supporters of Marcelo booed when Guajara was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 20 match minutes in a wonderful position. Paulinho Netto didn't get a good kick on the ball. With a little luck, Guajara's Nico Carioca got control of the ball when Zeca Dias tried to sneak it across the goal line. Agostinho Travassos sent away a hard shot on goal in the 27th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. The audience thought a goal was coming when Zeca Dias got free with Nico Carioca in the 31st minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Zeca Dias received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 32nd minute. Nico Carioca tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After 33 played minutes Guajara got a freekick which was hit by Paulinho Netto. José Paulo Varela sent away a hard shot on goal in the 37th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Juvenal Cavalcante's late challenge caught a Guajara's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Juvenal Cavalcante helped the player get up and apologised. Guajara's Paulinho Netto couldn't find anyone to pass the ball to, so he shot a long shot towards the goal in the 40th minute. The shot went wide which resulted in a goal kick for Marcelo. With a little luck, Guajara's Nico Carioca got control of the ball when Zeca Dias tried to sneak it across the goal line. Af the end of the first half the score was 2-0. The first half had gone as expected for the home team.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Erasmo de Queiroz made a kick off. The supporters of Guajara booed when Marcelo was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 64 match minutes in a wonderful position. Paulão Paes didn't get a good kick on the ball. Guajara's Agostinho Travassos got a good chance for a goal in the 72nd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. In the 79th match minute, Marcelo was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Paulão Paes to maneuver through the defense. From a short distance, Guajara's José Paulo Varela, in the 80th minute, tried to place the ball behind Luiz Gustavo Cabral, but the ball hit the right post on the wrong side and went out. An unexpectedly hard shot by Erasmo de Queiroz in the 84th minute of play forced Guajara's goalkeeper Nico Carioca to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 85 minutes into the match, Guajara's goal looked a bit too open when Erasmo de Queiroz came free, but Nico Carioca reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. If Erasmo de Queiroz had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 86th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After a rather tough play, Guajara's Paulinho Netto got a free kick in the 93rd minute. Marcelo's fans were exulted and cheered after their team won in a match that could easily have gone the other way.
