Canuma's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Guajara the free kick. The supporters of Guajara booed when Canuma was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 18 match minutes in a wonderful position. Falcão Penha didn't get a good kick on the ball. 21 minutes into the match, Canuma's goalkeeper Cláudio Senna had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Agostinho Travassos. Guajara's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Paulinho Netto in the 23rd minute. The corner led Guajara's Guilherme Lago to fire away a dangerous shot which Cláudio Senna despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. After 24 played minutes Guajara got a freekick which was hit by Ramón Hames. The audience was convinced that Didi Mota's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Nico Carioca was relentless in the 25th minute of the game. The referee showed Carlos Baiano the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. In the 35th match minute, Canuma was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Carlos Baiano to maneuver through the defense. After some fancy dribbling in the 44th minute, Denílson Corrêa managed to get in a good position for a shot. Canuma's supporters rose to their feet, but Denílson Corrêa was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Nico Carioca breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

Guajara's Nico Carioca played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Didi Mota in the 51st minute of play. José Paulo Varela blasted a shot towards the goal in the 57th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Cláudio Senna having to make a save. Agostinho Travassos struck a weak shot in the 59th minute. Cláudio Senna didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Guajara. After a defensive mix-up in Guajara's zone, Denílson Corrêa stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Nico Carioca came out of the goal and Denílson Corrêa tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. José Paulo Varela sent away a hard shot on goal in the 67th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. An unexpectedly hard shot by Didi Mota in the 75th minute of play forced Guajara's goalkeeper Nico Carioca to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The audience was convinced that José Paulo Varela's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Cláudio Senna was relentless in the 76th minute of the game.
