After having played for 4 minutes, Caetano Madureira managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Santos's supporters crossed their fingers, but Caetano Madureira was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Caetano Madureira received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 6th minute. Paulão Vidal tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. When Agenor Monteiro came up free with the goalie in the 17th minute, the Republica fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Agenor Monteiro couldn't finish the play. Caio Furtado took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Agenor Monteiro, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Kaká de Queiroz recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 33rd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Charles Neiva's late challenge caught a Republica's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Charles Neiva helped the player get up and apologised. The referee blew the whistle for a penalty in the 35th minute of the game. One of Santos:s players had nearly got his shirt torn off by an opponent while getting free in front of Republica:s goal. Kaká de Queiroz fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 41st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Caio Furtado having to interfere. The supporters of Republica booed when Santos was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 42 match minutes in a wonderful position. Michel Hermes didn't get a good kick on the ball. Adalberto Mandrak's late challenge caught a Santos's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Adalberto Mandrak helped the player get up and apologised. Adalberto Mandrak kicked well hit freekick during the 46th minute of the match. Paulão Vidal acted impressively in front of the goal and made a superb save when he, in the 47th minute, took the ball on the long shot from Michel Hermes. After the first half Republica were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Caetano Madureira to make the kick off. Paulão Vidal made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Caetano Madureira in the 62nd minute of play.
