Carlos Monteiro made a fantastic save in the 5th minute, when Antônio Carlos Botelho sent off a good shot on target. When Júlio Lira came up free with the goalie in the 6th minute, the Hidrolina fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Júlio Lira couldn't finish the play. Didi Recife received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 8th minute. Ciro Cardozo tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. When the match had gone on for 10 minutes, João Carlos Simões put it in 0-1 from a short distance just to the right of Ciro Cardozo. Júlio Lira recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 30th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. If Júlio Lira had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 39th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Carlos Monteiro made a fantastic save in the 41st minute, when Antônio Carlos Botelho sent off a good shot on target. Ciro Cardozo showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Juninho Barbosa in the 43rd minute of the match. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.
The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Júlio Lira was the one to do the kick off. The supporters of Hidrolina booed when Margarida was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 54 match minutes in a wonderful position. Juninho Barbosa didn't get a good kick on the ball. Margarida's Carlos Monteiro played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Antônio Carlos Botelho in the 55th minute of play. Ciro Cardozo didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Margarida. Carlos Monteiro showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Antônio Carlos Botelho in the 88th minute of the match. After some careless play in the Margarida defense, Antônio Carlos Botelho kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Carlos Monteiro. The Margarida fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Carlos Monteiro should have stopped the shot. Margarida's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
