Silvinho Prestes was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. After having played for 16 minutes, Alfredinho Vasconcelos managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. VASCO DA GAMA's supporters crossed their fingers, but Alfredinho Vasconcelos was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. The supporters of VASCO DA GAMA booed when Nação Rubro Negra was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 18 match minutes in a wonderful position. Valério Souto didn't get a good kick on the ball. Silvinho Prestes made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Alfredinho Vasconcelos in the 21st minute of play. The VASCO DA GAMA fans' excitement grew in the 34th match minute when VASCO DA GAMA's Ciro de Brito looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 2-0 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene. Silvinho Prestes came out of the goal and Ciro de Brito tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Ciro de Brito who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 45thth minute tested the skills of Silvinho Prestes when he managed to save the team from getting behind. After a defensive mix-up in Nação Rubro Negra's zone, Alfredinho Vasconcelos stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Silvinho Prestes came out of the goal and Alfredinho Vasconcelos tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Váldson Coelho to make the kick off. Váldson Coelho's late challenge caught a VASCO DA GAMA's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Váldson Coelho helped the player get up and apologised. After a rather tough play, Nação Rubro Negra's Váldson Coelho got a free kick in the 53rd minute. The audience was convinced that Alfredinho Vasconcelos's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Silvinho Prestes was relentless in the 56th minute of the game. When Alfredinho Vasconcelos came up free with the goalie in the 60th minute, the VASCO DA GAMA fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Alfredinho Vasconcelos couldn't finish the play.
