Verdao's Gilberto de Lara played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Cristóvão Fernandez in the 6th minute of play. Zeca Pernambucano could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 10th minute of the match, but Gilberto de Lara made a huge save. In the 12th minute Cristóvão Fernandez shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Gilberto de Lara saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Valério Terra during the 16th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After 16 played minutes Verdao got a freekick which was hit by Valério Terra. After a defensive mix-up in Verdao's zone, Cristóvão Fernandez stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Gilberto de Lara came out of the goal and Cristóvão Fernandez tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. 23 minutes into the game, Edmundo Teixeira cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 0-1. Ernani Guerra was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. When Dadá Koehler fell near the penalty area in the 25th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Cratheus's protests and gave Dadá Koehler a yellow card for diving instead. In the 25th match minute, Cratheus was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Dadá Koehler to maneuver through the defense. Gilberto de Lara made a fantastic save in the 29th minute, when Dadá Koehler sent off a good shot on target. In the 38th minute, Zeca Pernambucano fired away a shot on goal. He put a little to much spin on the ball and sent it just wide of the right post. An unexpectedly hard shot by Cristóvão Fernandez in the 41st minute of play forced Verdao's goalkeeper Gilberto de Lara to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Zeca Pernambucano's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Gilberto de Lara read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 43rd minute of play. 44 minutes into the game, Verdao's Luís Paulo Cearense nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Ernani Guerra made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-2. An unexpectedly hard shot by Luís Paulo Cearense in the 50th minute of play forced Cratheus's goalkeeper Ernani Guerra to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After the first half Verdao were leading 0-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Luís Paulo Cearense to strike the kick off in the second half. If Cristóvão Fernandez had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 54th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Zeca Pernambucano fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 63rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Gilberto de Lara having to interfere. Gilberto de Lara showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Cristóvão Fernandez in the 72nd minute of the match. When Cratheus's Zeca Pernambucano in the 79th minute got a chance for a shot 79th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. After 95 minutes, Júlio Alagoano mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Cratheus and the Verdao players grew even worse after the yellow card. Júlio Alagoano kicked well hit freekick during the 95th minute of the match. With an all-out effort, Verdao's Ernani Guerra threw himself towards the right post 96 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Luís Paulo Cearense, which otherwise would have been placed in the net.
