Fred Secco made an important save on a dangerous shot by Benê Donato in the 4th minute. Benê Donato received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 6th minute. Fred Secco tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Aníbal Pitta struck a weak shot in the 8th minute. Fred Secco didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Japecanaa FC. The supporters of Japecanaa FC booed when Baia was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 9 match minutes in a wonderful position. Maurinho Soeiro didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 10th minute, Benê Donato hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. An unexpectedly hard shot by Humberto Meirelles in the 13th minute of play forced Japecanaa FC's goalkeeper Jefferson Fontes to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 19thth minute of the game Pedro Luís Mumbach who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Japecanaa FC's Jefferson Fontes was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. After 22 minutes, Belmiro Ferraz mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Baia and the Japecanaa FC players grew even worse after the yellow card. In the 23rd match minute, Japecanaa FC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Aníbal Pitta to maneuver through the defense. Jefferson Fontes showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Pedro Luís Mumbach in the 25th minute of the match. Belmiro Ferraz kicked well hit freekick during the 27th minute of the match. After 28 played minutes Baia got a freekick which was hit by Enéas Penha. Guilherme Félix shot from long distance in the 29th minute, but Fred Secco was prepared and stopped the ball at the left post. Benê Donato sent away a hard shot on goal in the 33rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Kléberson Moraes hit a great freekick 36 minutes into the match. In the 37th minute of the match Arlindo Teixeira shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Jefferson Fontes showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Humberto Meirelles in the 48th minute of play forced Japecanaa FC's goalkeeper Jefferson Fontes to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Aníbal Pitta to make the kick off. 52 minutes into the match, Baia's goal looked a bit too open when Aníbal Pitta came free, but Fred Secco reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Maurinho Soeiro kicked well hit freekick during the 55th minute of the match. In the 63rd minute, Humberto Meirelles got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. After some fancy dribbling in the 80th minute, Pedro Luís Mumbach managed to get in a good position for a shot. Baia's supporters rose to their feet, but Pedro Luís Mumbach was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Jefferson Fontes breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Aníbal Pitta fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 85th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Fred Secco having to interfere. If Benê Donato had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 87th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 90th minute, Benê Donato left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Japecanaa FC fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 1-0. The crowd rose to their feet and cheered when the referee blew the final whistle. Japecanaa FC had won after a very even match.
