The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Rio de Janeiro EC's Beto Novaes played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Aníbal de Queirós in the 20th minute of play. Colonia SC's Benê Mineiro got a good chance for a goal in the 21st minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Rio de Janeiro EC's Beto Novaes played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Aníbal de Queirós in the 22nd minute of play. Aníbal de Queirós recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 24th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. 27 minutes into the match, Rio de Janeiro EC's goal looked a bit too open when Aníbal de Queirós came free, but Beto Novaes reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Josué Veiga took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Joaquim Sá, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Clemente Lima during the 35th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. The supporters of Colonia SC booed when Rio de Janeiro EC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 35 match minutes in a wonderful position. Clemente Lima didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 41st minute, Colonia SC's Benê Mineiro fired away a free kick that almost went in the goal. Beto Novaes was prepared for the shot, but didn't have to make a play as the shot flew over the goal. Benê Mineiros short, quick shot in the 45thth minute got Beto Novaes to make great effort and bar the ball away from getting in. 48 minutes had been played when some careless play by Rio de Janeiro EC's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. João Augusto Silveira was slow to take the kick. During this time Colonia SC's players had a chance to rest. The fans had the chance to grab some refreshments as the whistle went for half-time. The score stood at 0-0 after a close first half.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Clemente Lima to strike the kick off in the second half. In the 55th minute, Gabriel Borges hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. If Benê Mineiro had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 59th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After some fancy dribbling in the 68th minute, Clemente Lima managed to get in a good position for a shot. Josué Veiga breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Charles Luz took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 76th minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Beto Novaes. Rio de Janeiro EC's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line.
