Ivo Secco's shot when he came free in front of the goal in the 10thth minute, Luizinho Pontes skillfully showed off with a save to what seemed to be an obvious goal. Eurico Lira charged in rather forcefully in the 11th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Eurico Lira the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. In the 11th match minute, Flamengo was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Eurico Lira to maneuver through the defense. In the 12th minute of the match Dito Prado sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Paulo José Negri skillfully saved the ball. Flamengo's Adalberto Mumbach got a good chance for a goal in the 21st minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. In the 31st minute, Ronaldo Cordeiro hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. 35 minutes into the match, Aníbal Saldanha notched a goal, 0-1, to the right of Flamengo's Paulo José Negri. Paulo José Negri was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. A collision led to Flamengo getting a freekick after 38 minutes play. Diego Chaves was astounded when the referee showed him the red card after a seemingly innocent challenge, 45 minutes into the match. In the 45th minute, one of Flamengo:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for Flamengo. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 0-3 lead.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Aníbal Saldanha was the one to do the kick off. If Eurico Lira had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 54th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Paulo José Negri took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Aníbal Saldanha, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Paulo José Negri made an important save on a dangerous shot by Aílton Couto in the 57th minute. After a rather tough play, Flamengo's Ronaldo Cordeiro got a free kick in the 58th minute. The away crowd were delighted with the way their team had played and cheered loudly when the final whistle sounded. Fluminense walked away with the win, even though the match was close until the end.
