CR Vasco da Gama's Wellington de Souza played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Kaká Araújo in the 12th minute of play. CR Vasco da Gama's Anselmo de Barros got a good chance for a goal in the 16th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Wellington de Souza stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Rony Tande's shot from short distance in the 19th minute. Wellington de Souza made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Kaká Araújo in the 31st minute of play. If Rony Tande had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 35th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 37th minute Rony Tande shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Wellington de Souza saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Kaká Araújo might have been able to make a better finish in the 38th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Wellington de Souza. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Kaká Araújo ran back to his position shaking his head. With his leg Aníbal Goiano managed to avoid a goal in the 46thth minute, when CR Vasco da Gama's Anselmo de Barros fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. The score stood at 0-0 when the half time whistle went. Both sets of players seemed reasonably pleased with how the match was going.
