Piranga AD's Marcinho Azevedo proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 6th minute of the match, managed to save Piranga AD from getting a goal against them. An unexpected shot in the 8th minute by Cristóvão Alcântara got the crowd on their feet, but to their dismay it went out on the left side. When Wellington Pinheiro, who was free, got the in front of the goal in the 8 minute he wasn't focused and tipped the ball just over the goal. The Marcinho Azevedo was delighted since the ball would have got in if it had gone under the crossbar. Cristóvão Alcântara came free with the goalkeeper in the 9th minute of the match, and shot straight on target. The shot was a little too simple and Marcinho Azevedo could save by the left post. Cristóvão Alcântara took the ball and in the 15 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Marcinho Azevedo. Marcinho Azevedo dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 1-0. After a rather tough play, Piranga AD's Walmyr Meirelles got a free kick in the 18th minute. The supporters of Piranga AD booed when New York Red Bull was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 24 match minutes in a wonderful position. Naldo Marinho didn't get a good kick on the ball. Piranga AD's Armando Moraes got a good chance for a goal in the 26th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Nelson Palmeira showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Leonardo Figueiredo in the 32nd minute of the match. Nelson Palmeira made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Walmyr Meirelles in the 33rd minute of play. Wellington Pinheiro received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 35th minute. Marcinho Azevedo tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. The audience thought a goal was coming when Cristóvão Alcântara got free with Marcinho Azevedo in the 40th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. When Walmyr Meirelles fell near the penalty area in the 43rd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Piranga AD's protests and gave Walmyr Meirelles a yellow card for diving instead. Cristóvão Alcântara's shot when he came free in front of the goal in the 46thth minute, Marcinho Azevedo skillfully showed off with a save to what seemed to be an obvious goal. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 2-0.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Cristóvão Alcântara to make the kick off. A collision led to Piranga AD getting a freekick after 53 minutes play. Walmyr Meirelles hit a great ball. Baltazar Coelho kicked well hit freekick during the 54th minute of the match. In the 55th minute Wellington Pinheiro shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Marcinho Azevedo saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Wellington Pinheiro hit a great freekick 58 minutes into the match. Leonardo Figueiredo could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 59th minute of the match, but Nelson Palmeira made a huge save. Nelson Palmeira was out of position in the 62 minute of play, and Armando Moraes capitalized on the mistake with a soft shot into the goal. Armando Moraes really showed his touch with that goal: 2-1. A collision led to New York Red Bull getting a freekick after 68 minutes play. André Luiz Diniz hit a great ball. 69 minutes into the match, Piranga AD's Ciro Trancoso broke free and took a long shot that unfortunately flew wide. A fine initiative that could have resulted in a goal. Through an outstanding action, after 77 minutes, Nelson Palmeira successfully got his hands on the ball before it slid into the goal at the right post. Kaká Paraíba was astounded when the referee showed him the red card after a seemingly innocent challenge, 85 minutes into the match. 85 minutes into the game, one of Piranga AD:s players got tackled near the goal, and the referee blew for a penalty. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Wellington Pinheiro in the 91st managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Marcinho Azevedo saved Piranga AD from getting behind. Marcinho Azevedo showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Cristóvão Alcântara, who was totally free with the ball in the 93rd minute. Nelson Palmeira made a fantastic save in the 97th minute, when Leonardo Figueiredo sent off a good shot on target. The referee blew his whistle, and the match came to a close. The players exchanged shirts and headed down the tunnel. The New York Red Bull fans cheered their team off the field, for while Piranga AD had put up a good fight, they were unable to come out of the game with any points to show for their effort.
