Pedro Luiz Tepedino took the ball and in the 4 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Zé Pedro Leite. Zé Pedro Leite dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 0-1. Zé Pedro Leite showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Cafu Rocha, who was totally free with the ball in the 8th minute. Zé Pedro Leite made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Pedro Luiz Tepedino in the 11th minute of play. In the 16th minute Faustão Reis shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Zé Pedro Leite saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Zé Pedro Leite made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Isaltino Carioca in the 23rd minute of play. Guga Pimenta could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 24th minute of the match, but Ernani Vander made a huge save. In the 26th minute Faustão Reis shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Zé Pedro Leite saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Zé Pedro Leite made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Cafu Rocha in the 30th minute of play. Upatininga AD's defense didn't have a chance, in the 41st minute, when Mário Jacinto scored to the left of an out of position Ernani Vander, making the score, 1-1. Zé Pedro Leite took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Pedro Luiz Tepedino, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The first half was very even, with the score at 1-1 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Mário Jacinto to make the kick off. The supporters of Upatininga AD booed when Fluminense FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 53 match minutes in a wonderful position. Jailson Reis didn't get a good kick on the ball. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Betinho Carioca during the 54th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After a rather tough play, Fluminense FC's Betinho Carioca got a free kick in the 54th minute. Faustão Reis recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 56th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. An unexpectedly hard shot by Faustão Reis in the 59th minute of play forced Fluminense FC's goalkeeper Zé Pedro Leite to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 61st minute, Upatininga AD's Pedro Luiz Tepedino ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Zé Pedro Leite. Zé Pedro Leite yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 1-2. In the 70th minute of the match Albertino de Medeiros shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Zé Pedro Leite showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. After 72 minutes of play, the referee blew the whistle. It was a penalty for Fluminense FC! In the 79th minute Pedro Luiz Tepedino shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Zé Pedro Leite saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After a rather tough play, Upatininga AD's Pedro Luiz Tepedino got a free kick in the 82nd minute. Isaltino Carioca could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 84th minute of the match, but Zé Pedro Leite made a huge save. Upatininga AD's Ernani Vander played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Guga Pimenta in the 86th minute of play. In the 89th minute, Isaltino Carioca hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After recieving a nice pass, Fluminense FC's Mário Jacinto tried to score from far away in the 91st minute, but the ball went over the crossbar. Upatininga AD's supporters were very happy and cheered loudly because their team had won after a very close match.
