Operário Ferroviário EC's 孟志文 managed to work through Botafogo-RJ's defense and was going for an easy goal, but he hit the shot with his toe and the ball flew outside the goal. 孟志文 dejectedly held out his arms as if to ask why the ball hadn't gone in. If Franco Nola had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 22nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Marcos de Brito showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. In the 45th minute Gilson Bittencourt shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Cássio Neves saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 46 minutes into the match, Operário Ferroviário EC's goal looked a bit too open when Lauro Borges came free, but Cássio Neves reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 1-0.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. When Dênis Cabral fell near the penalty area in the 90th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick.
