Genílson dos Santos showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 1-0. After having played for 9 minutes, João Paulo Messias managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Portugal's supporters crossed their fingers, but João Paulo Messias was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. In the 11th minute the ball was on its way in behind Martinho's goalkeeper Armandinho Mazza, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Genílson dos Santos in the 13th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Armandinho Mazza saved Martinho from getting behind. Armandinho Mazza showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Genílson dos Santos in the 14th minute of the match. Rubens Carvalho received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 19th minute. Róbson Martins tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Genílson dos Santos sent away a hard shot on goal in the 23rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Genílson dos Santos's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Armandinho Mazza read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 32nd minute of play. Waldir de Amaral who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 33rdth minute tested the skills of Armandinho Mazza when he managed to save the team from getting behind. Armandinho Mazza made an important save on a dangerous shot by Waldir de Amaral in the 37th minute. Through an outstanding action, after 38 minutes, Armandinho Mazza successfully got his hands on the ball before it slid into the goal at the right post. After a rather tough play, Martinho's Carlos Eduardo Seco got a free kick in the 39th minute. After a defensive mix-up in Martinho's zone, Waldir de Amaral stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Armandinho Mazza came out of the goal and Waldir de Amaral tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Armandinho Mazza took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Genílson dos Santos, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After having played for 47 minutes, Waldir de Amaral managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Portugal's supporters crossed their fingers, but Waldir de Amaral was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Af the end of the first half the score was 1-0. The first half had gone as expected for the home team.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Ronaldão Palmeira made a kick off. Armandinho Mazza showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Genílson dos Santos, who was totally free with the ball in the 52nd minute. Ronaldão Palmeira sent away a hard shot on goal in the 53rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. The audience was convinced that Genílson dos Santos's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Armandinho Mazza was relentless in the 56th minute of the game. Armandinho Mazza showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Waldir de Amaral in the 58th minute of the match. In the 69th minute Genílson dos Santos shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Armandinho Mazza saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The supporters of Martinho booed when Portugal was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 70 match minutes in a wonderful position. Genílson dos Santos didn't get a good kick on the ball. The audience was convinced that Genílson dos Santos's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Armandinho Mazza was relentless in the 84th minute of the game.
