Vágner de Mendonça tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. In the 17th minute, Vicente Proença left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Rocha fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 0-2. In the 25th match minute, Estrangeiro was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Jeferson Severo to maneuver through the defense. The audience was convinced that Murilo Cruz's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Vágner de Mendonça was relentless in the 26th minute of the game. After a defensive mix-up in Estrangeiro's zone, Vicente Proença stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Vágner de Mendonça came out of the goal and Vicente Proença tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. After 32 played minutes, Rocha's Márcio Cosme shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Vágner de Mendonça came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Rocha reached it. Murilo Cruz received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 35th minute. Jeferson Severo hit a great ball. After some fancy dribbling in the 39th minute, Vicente Proença managed to get in a good position for a shot. Rocha's supporters rose to their feet, but Vicente Proença was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Vágner de Mendonça breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. In the 41st minute Vicente Proença shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Vágner de Mendonça saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Vicente Proença fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 45th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Vágner de Mendonça having to interfere. Vágner de Mendonça showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Murilo Cruz, who was totally free with the ball in the 46th minute. In the 47th match minute, Estrangeiro was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Zé Roberto Pena to maneuver through the defense. When Murilo Cruz came up free with the goalie in the 48th minute, the Rocha fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Murilo Cruz couldn't finish the play. Rocha's Paulo Renato Lira played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Jairo Rossi in the 62nd minute of play. When Isaltino Pombal came up free with the goalie in the 64th minute, the Estrangeiro fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Isaltino Pombal couldn't finish the play.
