When the match had gone on for 11 minutes, Frank da Silveira took a quick shot and it went in 1-0 without a chance for Cléberson Dias to make any attempt to save it. In the 18th minute, Nilton de Mendonça made a precise shot to the right of Ronaldinho Guedes. Zelia's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-1. After a rather tough play, Valencia SC's Nilton de Mendonça got a free kick in the 22nd minute. If Edmundo Barros had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 24th minute. The referee ignored Zelia's protests and gave Murillo das Neves a yellow card for diving instead. After 29 played minutes Zelia got a freekick which was hit by Murillo das Neves. The first half was very even, with the score at 1-1 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Frank da Silveira was the one to do the kick off. Edmundo Barros fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 54th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Cléberson Dias having to interfere. Cléberson Dias made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Frank da Silveira in the 56th minute of play. In the 57th match minute, Valencia SC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Cléberson Prestes to maneuver through the defense. Cléberson Prestes hit a great freekick 60 minutes into the match. Afonso Coutinho took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 65th minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Ronaldinho Guedes. Zelia's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. In the 74th minute, Luiz Eduardo Carioca hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field.
