Lúcio Tasso received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 22nd minute. Juarês Paiva tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. With an all-out effort, Itaici SS's Juarês Paiva threw himself towards the right post 32 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Lúcio Tasso, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. Ramiro Hermes received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 34th minute. William Cunha tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Eusébio de Sena charged in rather forcefully in the 35th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Eusébio de Sena the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. When Lúcio Tasso came up free with the goalie in the 38th minute, the Itaici SS fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Lúcio Tasso couldn't finish the play. Juarês Paiva showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Lúcio Tasso, who was totally free with the ball in the 40th minute. Lúcio Tasso struck a weak shot in the 42nd minute. Juarês Paiva didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Itaici SS. An unexpectedly hard shot by Ramiro Hermes in the 46th minute of play forced Itaici SS's goalkeeper William Cunha to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Lúcio Tasso made a kick off. The supporters of Itaici SS booed when Guarani was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 51 match minutes in a wonderful position. Sidney Paraibano didn't get a good kick on the ball. Lúcio Tasso spun around in front of the goal 52 minutes in the game, and got away a shot that, to his disappointment, went to the left of Guarani's goal. When Elder França fell near the penalty area in the 58th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Guarani's protests and gave Elder França a yellow card for diving instead. After 58 played minutes Guarani got a freekick which was hit by Elder França. If Washington Mangueira had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 59th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Lúcio Tasso fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 63rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Juarês Paiva having to interfere. After some fancy dribbling in the 67th minute, Lúcio Tasso managed to get in a good position for a shot. Itaici SS's supporters rose to their feet, but Lúcio Tasso was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Juarês Paiva breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. After a defensive mix-up in Guarani's zone, Washington Mangueira stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Juarês Paiva came out of the goal and Washington Mangueira tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Guarani's Sérgio Lago got a good chance for a goal in the 70th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After a defensive mix-up in Itaici SS's zone, Ramiro Hermes stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. William Cunha came out of the goal and Ramiro Hermes tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. William Cunha made an important save on a dangerous shot by Sérgio Lago in the 77th minute. After having played for 88 minutes, Lúcio Tasso managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Itaici SS's supporters crossed their fingers, but Lúcio Tasso was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. After some fancy dribbling in the 90th minute, Washington Mangueira managed to get in a good position for a shot. Itaici SS's supporters rose to their feet, but Washington Mangueira was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Juarês Paiva breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. The audience was convinced that Lúcio Tasso's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Juarês Paiva was relentless in the 94th minute of the game.
